Ok, I'm going to have to admit I work here.

But I didn't always!  I saw Absinthe last year and it blew my mind.

This year, I heard they were hiring, and I like to make a little extra cash in the summer, so applied I did.  I get called for an interview, so I throw on a suit and waltz over to the interview on a very hot day in July.  I am greeted by two ladies of Australians background and accent, and am immediately charmed.  They are funny, energetic, and engaging.  I know, I sound like my mom.  But it was the most fun interview of my life!

There are two shows so far this year - Desir and Absinthe.  Desir is for people who don't like to hear the word cunt spoken out loud.  Absinthe is the really fun one.  Both are very good.

I now work there on Fridays and Saturdays and the best part is getting to watch the show...over...and over...and over...and watching people's faces as their mouths drop open.

The MC is hilariously, wickedly funny, and the performers are incredibly talented.  And all very nice.  Sometimes whilst sweeping the floor or adjusting chairs in between shows I'll venture a smile and a "I think you're awesome" to, say, a woman in her 40s who performs previously unimaginable feats upon roller skates.  She smiles backs and continues to converse with me until we are both whisked away to continue doing what we're supposed to be doing - me - sweeping, -her- being awesome.  And my day is made.

Oh, and most of the audience is b&ters and tourists with a sprinkling of New Yorkers.  But you know what?  They're the best audience ever.  These people come dressed like they're going out for a night on the town, they have great attitudes and they really really want to be there and have a good time.  It makes for a great show.

And you have the BEST view in NY while you're waiting for the show to start.  Get yourself a cocktail, and look out over the water...at the Brooklyn Bridge...and the Watchtower (don't get too caught up in that though)...and relax.

But then get ready to party!
If you're a cynical New Yorker who likes sexiness, raunchiness, hilariousness, and talent, this will be one of those experiences that will make you feel like a little kid again.  A drunk little kid (there's a bar and people are not afraid to use it.)

Have fun!

Spiegeltent is on the other side of the Seaport Mall. Nice location by the water and the beer garden setup was much nicer this year. There's a tiny dance floor and private tents you can reserve for an intimate dinner.

There's a new venue in town. But careful, don't blink or you might miss it. That's right, for the 2nd year running, NYC is playing host to the Spiegeltent. All the way from Belgium to the South Street Seaport's Pier 17, this 1920s masterpiece of velvet, teak, stained glass and a thousand (1,000!) mirrors is a beautiful summertime romance for the city of NY.

From noon to the wee hours of the night, our Art Deco mistress plays host to a diverse array of musicians and all sorts of outrageous feats of derring-do, including the cabaret and high-flying thrills of their 2 long-running shows, Absinthe and La Vie.

I first visited Spiegelworld for the Fader Magazine Summer Music Issue Party, which featured the Brazilian buzz band, Bonde Do Role, and old school hip-hop artist, DJ Quik. Outside the main tent, Spiegelworld is a mini oasis, with breathtaking views of the East River and its many bridges, sparkling as far as the eye can see. With riverside tables, private cabanas, an outdoor DJ tent, and a lengthy bar to accommodate the throngs of beautiful people, it was a perfect spot for a private party. But it would be equally equitable for the more mild-mannered vibe of events like summer 07's Badly Drawn Boy and DeVotchKa shows.

The real star of Spiegelworld is the Spiegeltent, herself. It may not look that big from outside, but don't let that fool you. The central dance floor holds a healthy size crowd, with additional space around the perimeter for lingering at a table with friends, loitering at the bar, or lurking around the periphery, looking for a dance partner. The only folks to feel cramped in the space are likely the artists, themselves. If they're more than a four-piece, they'll be seriously squished. That must be why they gravitate toward the types of acts they're booking. Check out the full schedule at their official site.

She was a shining star in last year's summer concert season, garnering both critical acclaim and huge word of mouth buzz. But you better catch Ms. Spiegeltent by 9/23, because just like the disappearing summer, to paraphrase Verbal Kint, "And poof. Just like that, [s]he's gone."

I'll make this short and sweet.
I saw Absinthe at the Spiegeltent on July 27 and it was an awesome show. Everything about it was fun, from the not-too-expensive drinks to the talented performers.
I paid $25 for my ticket online, and it was well worth the price.
Also if you get the chance, eat something at the restaurant they have at the Spiegeltent, too. Everything looked really good (besides the nachos, which were just okay).

I think this wins the award for the most surreal venue in the city. Now, maybe it was the drinks I consumed before attending, but the entire time I was trying to figure out exactly what the event was all about. Our group ended up here through one of those "friend of a friend" connections, and since no one else had any better ideas, we just went along for the ride,

The atmosphere was very reminiscent of the roaring 20's mixed with Cirque du Soleil and a predominantly younger crowd (but we were there late for the music). All in all I would go back to try a get a better grip on the whole event. The views are great and being down on the river is a nice change of pace compared to the usual going-out scene.

Some of my recommendations if you decide to check this show out:

1.  Get a seat as close to the center ring as possible.  Being part of the action is half the fun!  Plus, sitting near the rear will obstruct your view.
2.  Go to the late showing.  The early showing is all the little kids and old people (not that i've got anything against kids and old people :P), but this is a rather raunchy show, and you want as rowdy a crowd as possible.
3.  If you're too cheap to pony up the $70+ to watch the show, just come down to pier 17 near the spiegeltent and enjoy the amazing views of the east river/brooklyn bridge, grab a drink at the bar (my bartender was super cool last night), and dance the night away with the live dj.

The show itself = 3 stars
The venue/setting = 5 stars
Which avgs out to my 4 star rating.
